Friday 27th September Away to Wem USC

Lost 6 / 8

With all the problems resolved this match finally went ahead to a somewhat cold & quiet night at the USC, the atmosphere went even colder after the first four all won with the fielders going  four nil up.

One of Shropshires greatest bowlers in Tony Poole led the way with a 21/13 win against J.Fyderwho was never any danger to Tony, next saw Richie Goddard taking Mick Reeves all over the green with Rich stuck on twenty Mick pulled back 8 points before Richie got the final one. Keith Walton played it tight against Derek Wright which at 18 across could of gone either way but Walton kept is head to win 21/19 & at four saw Alan Peach finishing off his season with a good win against J.Fyder at 21/13.

Tony Poole 21/13 I.Bailey Richie Goddard 21/14 Mick Reeves
Keith Walton 21/19 Derek Wright Alan Peach 21/13 J.Fyder

Into the middle where young gun Callum Wraight standing in for the unavailable Mark Rogers played very well against Barry Thomas, having got to 10 across then to Callum 17/20 but then played two great ends to pinch the match 21/20, new granddad Graham Rogers had a bad start then came back & went 10/5 up but then Mal Bartley staged is own come back & ran out 21/18 winner,   at seven young Steve Duckett was always going to struggle against an on form John Wilkes who blasted Steve 10/21,  Paul Williams who had a stroll coming to against Steve Almark, no danger anywhere or in anyway, this was due to Steve not being up for it ?, with six two up after eight & four still to go, the fielders were looking for one more win to get third spot in the league..

Callum Wraight 21/20 Barry Thomas Graham Rogers 18/21 Mel Bartley
Steve Duckett 10/21 John Wilkes Paul Williams 21/10 Steve Almark

At nine saw Steve Walker who struggled on this green & really not at is best losing out 12/21 against S.Thomas, ten saw Tony Parry trying to make is name against Mel Evans but did not work as Tony proved to be no danger himself losing 6/21, the old & bald Lee Clarke, surely he could manage to get the much needed point but after going to 9/1 down then did do a fine recovery with the help of some good fielders support, even without the much missed Glyn Herbert , getting to 20 across with the jack but Bailey played a real one to win the game 21/20, still all was not lost we had Mike Thomas from the Tanner Team who can play a bit & was already 9/2 up against Sharn Nagle but bowls being the game it is saw Tappers lead slowly cut down & at 20/12 Tapper could not score the one point, again with Sharn being game on & Tapper with one bowl still to go, all it needed was a real one, he launched his last bowl  into the top corner & as it came to a stop the Wem supporters went quiet & we thought he had done for a moment but it was not to be so he went out losing 20/21 & the match with the aggregate & the third spot in the league..

Steve Walker 12/21 Scott Thomas Tony Parry 6/21 Mel Evans
Lee Clarke 20/21 Fred Bailey Mike Thomas 20/21 Sharn Nagle

With Alan Peach standing in for the missing Captain Andrew Duckett there was much disappointment in the club house later but we did manage to talk a good game.

Friday 16th Sept Home to Archibald Worthington

Won 10 / 4

The fielders did not let the local press coverage over the Wem game spoil the last home game of the season, with the temperature now dropping the first four blasted off with a straight four nil win with only Richie Goodard having to play some close bowls after C.Pearce gave a bit of surge at he start taking Richie to 15/7 down but then Richie finding marks in the corners, ran out 21/18.

Keith Walton 21/11 G.Roberts Richie Goddard 21/18 C.Pearce

Mark Rogers 11/21 A.Ball Alan Peach 14/21 P.Smith
Steve Duckett 21/16 Andrew Moss Graham Rogers 18/21 I.Price
AWC pulled back three games in the middle with young gun Mark Rogers admitting to `playing his worst game of the season` with Steve Duckett taking on the well known Andrew Moss, they produced some good bowls but Steve used the green well to win 21/16, five three after eight.
Barry Keep 21/10 P.Evans Andrew Duckett 11/21 P.Latham
Kevin Price 21/5 M.Jones Steve Walker 21/12 Ian Booth

Into the back four with Captain Andrew Duckett going down 11/21 against P.Latham saw some good bowling from the other three & Kevin Price taking the coppers with a great 21/5 win against M.Jones. With two games left, away to Wem on Wed & Wrockwoodine Wood on Friday the best the Fields can look to is third place

Friday 23rd August Home to St Georges

Lost 6 / 8

In this top of the league clash between the second & third placed rivals, Castlefields, were hoping for a repeat on last seasons score of a win of 9/5 which would then put them in a strong position for when they meet table toppers Meole Brace on Wed 28th Aug, but on the night the challenge could not be met & after some excellent bowling from the Dragons coupled with some great support from green-side it took to the last game to decide the winner, which was then taken on the aggregate by St Georges....
Glyn Herbert 13 21 Gary Cooper
Keith Walton 21 10 Chris Ball
Richie Goddard 21 19 Al Jones
Andrew Duckett 13 21 Keith Pessall
Gyln Herbert 13/21 Gary Cooper,Cooperman wins again at the fields Keith Walton Verses Chris Ball with Keith winning 21/10 Richire Goddard with it all to do keeping Al Jones at bay.. Andrew Duckett 13/21 Keith Pessall

Captain Andrew Duckett banked on a strong first four to try & gain a advantage in the front, in a one saw Glyn Herbert paired up with Gary Cooper, who did win here last season against Walton, at the start he did not look like it would happen again as Herbie ran up a 7/1 lead but then lost the jack which allowed Cooperman to find the weight & then play some excellent bowls on a short mark across the middle of the green scoring with the next 12 ends to take the score to 7/18, after a couple of fires from Herbie & an attempt to cut Cooper out which had no effect, Cooperman won the game 13/21, Keith Walton came on at two against Chris Ball, with the game even for the first ten ends taking the score to 7/6 Walton then surged ahead winning the game 21/10, Richie Goddard found himself up against Al Jones who made him play abit & took 31 ends before Richie got the vital last one after seeing Al slowly clawing back from 18/12 to 20/19 making Richie wait six ends before scoring to win the game 21/19 & at four saw Captain Andrew Duckett up against another of last seasons winners in Keith Pessall, after a good a start Andrew lost the jack at 7 across where Keith then murdered the green reachinf 16/9 & then it was all over for Andrew who could not get back at him losing 13/21, so after the first four the score was two across & the Dragons three up on aggregate...

Mark Rogers 21 16 Glyn Picknell
Graham Rogers 15 21 Mark Burroughs
Alan Peach 9 21 Tony Rhodes
Paul Williams 21 16 C. Barker

Alan Peach V the on fire Tony Rhodes with the maggot losing out 9/21.. Paul Williams.jpg (16968 bytes)

Into the middle with it all to do saw at five male model Mark Rogers turn on the style against Glyn Picknell, who met at St Georges this season & Mark ran out the winner, well it was the same here after a close game & good bowling from both players Mark again won 21/16, number six saw another of last years winners in Mark Burroughs taking time out from league secretary's duties to take on Graham Rogers who struggled at the start & let the game slip away even though Graham made Mark wait five ends before Mark eventually winning 15, at seven was Alan Peach who wished he stayed at home after the on fire Tony Rhodes pasted the green & Alan, reaching an amazing score of 0/14 before Alan managed to get the jack & changing from the corners which Tony was playing so well gained a couple of points but then Tony went back into the corners & with Alan having nothing left in is decorators bag allowed Tony to win 9, to the delight of the crowd from St Georges who by now could sense that a win could be on the cards, but we still had at eight Paul Williams who came up against C.Barker & with Willy just playing is normal game, Barker managed to fire eight times against Willy who did not let it get to him & ran out winning 21/16, with the games now at four apiece the Dragons managed to pull ahead on the aggregate by eight chalks...

Barry Keep 21 17 Andy Jones
Lee Clarke 17 21 M.Jones
Kevin Price 21 12 Alan Palin
Steve Walker 12 21 Ian Gaut
  Barry Keep.jpg (14389 bytes) Lee Clarke.jpg (12580 bytes)

KP.jpg (15055 bytes) Steve Walker V Ian Gaut.jpg (11160 bytes)

With the darkness approaching & the Fielders with it all to do, Barry Keep got off to a bad start going 2/12 down against Andy Jones but then sending the jack out on long marks got back into the game & from reaching 13/14 surged ahead to win 21/17, Lee Clarke found himself against the Dragons captain in Mick Jones who had been behind the team all through the game even managing to get Alan Palin off his phone to lend his support, with Lee going to 8/1 up things then went wrong with Mick having a bit of luck & a few rubs going is way he managed to run out winning 21/17 against Lee, at eleven we saw our own new boy Kevin Price coming up against the well known Alan Palin, but Kevin was still bubbling from last Saturdays win in the County cup over Dave `Rocky` Jones, & played another stormer with seven twos in his score, even after Alan changed the mark to play in front of the Dragons supporters but Kevin just played a tight game taking no notice of the crowd to win with a great 21/12, at this stage it was still not a clear cut on who would win & with the fielders sending in another season new boy in Steve Walker it still could be won but he was up against the experienced Ian Gaut who showed his class & skill with getting to 6/16 when Hookie had a bit of luck & managed to come back at Ian but it was not Hookie night losing out 12/21, so with the games at six across it all depended on the aggregate & the Dragons took the extra two points with an aggregate of eleven.

Captain Andew Duckett & the rest of the team were disappointed in now being beaten for the second time, at home, in the same season & all agreed that you cannot expect to win the League losing two games at home.

But bowls is a funny game & with Meole Brace on Wednesday TIME WILL TELL......

Friday 25th July Home to Chester Road

Won 8 / 6

In this second home game in two weeks the fielders were hoping to take the opportunity to go top of the League & get some extra points to start gaining a lead into the run down to the end of the season, having romped home last season with a 12/2 score line Captain Andrew Duckett not only changed the start position but also moved the playing order.

At number one saw a unfamiliar Lee Clarke drawn against the well known Charlie Weaver, who then gave Lee a lesson on how to bowl a green which has no run, winning 21/10 against Lee, Richie Goddard came on at number two & wondering what all the fuss is about & just played bowls to suit the green, which worked, as he ran out winning 21/10 against Alan Purcell, Glyn Herbert while struggled on the green managed to use his green knowledge to win 21/13 against Paul/Dave Williams, at four saw Captain Andrew Duckett have an easy game against Rod Manley winning 21/9 in only 19 ends, so three one up after four...

Lee Clarke 10/21 Charlie Weaver Richie Goddard 21/10 Alan Purcell
Glyn Herbert 21/13 Paul Williams Andy Duckett 21/9 Rod Manley
Into the middle with Paul Williams still having a bad spell losing out to Dave Ridgeway with 14/21 & not a happy bowler, young gun Mark Rogers played no better coming up against the on fire Melvern Jenkins who showed Mark that he can play a bit aswell, winning 21/12 against Mark, at seven Keith Walton could not get the weight when coming up against Paul Griffiths losing 16 & it was left to young Steve Duckett to pull somsthing back at eight winning 21/14 against Paul Fowles, this brought the score to four across going into the back four & all to play for.

Mark Rogers 12/21 Melvern Jenkins Keith Walton 16/21 Paul Griffiths
Steve Duckett 21/14 Paul Fowles Paul Williams 14/21 Dave Ridgeway
Paul Williams still suffering from the handshake of death sfter being presented with the most wins prize, this time losing 14 against Dave RidgewayMark Rogers having another bad game to lose 12/21 against Melvern JenkinsKeith Walton losing 16/21 against Paul GriffithsSteve Duckett on the way to losing 19 against Paul Fowles

At nine saw the unhappy Graham Rogers going into the lead at 6/5 then the next time he held the jack he was 17/7 down against Martin Lloyd who then ran out 21/11. in at ten saw this years new boy to the premier league in Steve Walker who knew he was playing for the aggregate & did not let anyone down winning 21/8 against Martin Lloyd, the same was for Kevin Price who played Les Markham off the green with a great 21/6 win & taking the coppers, old stalwart Barry Keep would be expected to win but Dave Rogers played some good bowls getting the better of him & clocking out with a 21/16 win against Keepe

Barry Keep 16/21 Dave Rogers Graham Rogers 11/21 Martin Lloyd
Kevin Price 21/6 Les Markham Steve Walker 21/8 Cedric Bancroft

Graham Rogers on the loser bench after being beaten 11/21 against Martin LloydBarry Keep going down 16/21 against Dave RogersKevin Price clawing some points back against Les Markham winning 21/6Steve Walker winning the aggreagate with a good win 21/8 Cedric Bancorft

So only some great bowls played by Kevin Price & Steve Walker managed to win this game on the aggregate & save the fielders from yet another home defeat, Captain Andrew Duckett had better work out what's going wrong or the title challenge will be down the pan. With next weeks away game at Childs Ercall & a fast green, we shall see if our green is to blame or the bowlers because luckily, tonight's other teams have had bad results & have allowed Castlefields to stay within the top three but gaining only 12 points from a possible 28 in the last two home games may well prove to be not good enough.....

Friday 12th July Home to Battlefield

Lost 4 / 10

Well someone had to do it, Castlefields have not lost at home since about 78/79 to Meole Brace & it was Battlefield who had the pleasure tonight, it was down to some good bowling by Battlefield & a over confident fields side who played badly as a Team.

Yes, we can blame the green, it would win a prize for the best looking green at the moment but with all the water the new sprinkler has been putting on, it as taken away the home advantage from the fielders, when you have away players drawing the ends to within a foot & licking the bowl something's wrong, yes some of Battlefield players do know our green well from having having been past players but with no run in it & being extra heavy with water, these top bowlers cannot use the extra bit of touch, you know that, little bit more, that bit of skill that sets them out as being better than Mr Average but no excuses for the team effort they played like s**t.

Alan Peach 7/21 James Grimstone Richie Goddard 20/21 Ian Christmas
Glyn Herbert 19/21 Kevin Perks Steve Duckett 15/21 Keith Wall
Mark Rogers 19/21 Terry Gray Graham Rogers 21/17 Harold Banks
Andy Duckett 19/21 Gary Wall Paul Williams 21/7 Mark Shaw
Barry Keep 21/13 Mal Parry Keith Walton 15/21 Pete Thomas
Kevin Price 21/20 Chris Greenway Lee Clarke 12/21 Peter Bound

  Glyn Herbert.jpg (24617 bytes) Paul Williams.jpg (25890 bytes) Richie Goddard.jpg (26592 bytes) Andy Duckett.jpg (26687 bytes) Graham Rogers.jpg (20788 bytes) Keith Walton.jpg (26631 bytes) Mark Rogers.jpg (18611 bytes) Alan Peach.jpg (18750 bytes) Kevin Price.jpg (18963 bytes) Lee Clarke.jpg (24066 bytes) Barry Keep.jpg (18407 bytes)

As what's been always said "you are only as good as your last game & past results mean nothing in this game", they have not given up the hunt yet, some people might think that Meole Brace have now won the League but remember the comeback last season which saw the fields get back to within six points, time will tell....

The message is to the Club President is:

 `NO MORE WATER`

Friday 12th July Away to Donnington Wood

Lost 6 / 8

Captain Andy Duckett was disappointed with this result feeling that, with three players who were not available he called in the reserves from the Tanners league & while they played well on this large difficult green one or two regulars were off touch with the land & weight, with Paul Williams still trying to shake off Wednesdays defeat when tonight suffered a 21/1 dubbing & is still having one of those bad nights .

Paul Williams collects the most wins Trophy from last years Shropshire Premier League President - Neville Edwards

PW.jpg (17611 bytes)

Another good win for the fielders who have been looking forward to this return game after SJB gave them a whitewash at the start of the season, SJB will say they could have had a couple of more points with two games that could of gone either way bit the fielders held on. the only disappointment was that Paul Williams, after collecting the most wins trophy from last years President Neville Edwards he then went & lost his game to the unknown Peter Sherry, this was the first time in three years that Paul had lost on is own green so Peter has took a good scalp.
